Mecklenburg, Va. where it has been in operation for two years past, to this place. The appellation of Classical is adopted, trom its Dcing used to designate those Fe male Academics in which the method of in struction pursued, is the Pestalozziun or In ductive. This plan of instruction is em ployed here, and extended, as far as practi cable into the various branches of study. The School is arranged in three Classes, the studies of which are as follows: I. Minor Class Heading, Writing, Spell ing and Defining, General outline of Geo graphy, Mental Arithmetic, First Principles of Grammar and Etymological Parsing, the Composition of Sentences and Simple De scriptions. II. Junior Class The three first of the above continued, Geography, Arithmetic continued, Syntactical Parsing, Punctuation, Outline of Astronomy and use of the Globes, Natural Philosophy, History of the United States and Composition. III. Sc?iior Class Arithmetic continued, Chemistry, History, Ancient and Modern, Chronology, Mythology, Astronomy, Rhe toric and Composition. Those who are not prepared to enter the first of these Classes, are retained for a time in a Preparatory Class. Those who wish to pursue a more extensive course, compose an Honorary Class. Instruction is also given in the Lamrua- ! ges. Needlework, Drawing and Painting, and Alus'.c. - Lectures arc delivered to the Senior Class, on M'mcralosryy Botany, and Mental and Moral Piiilcsojihy. The School is furnish ed with a consider.. b'e collection of Minerals and Botanical Collection, and with Appara tus for performing experiments in Natural Philosophy and Chemistry. The branches mentioned in the List of Studies are taught by Mr. and Mrs. HOL LlS'l'lK, to be assisted by such other teachers as the number of pupils may re quire. The Lectures and Instruction, in Latin and French, arc given by Mr. Ilollis ter. Plain and ornamental Needlework, Drawing in Perspective, Painting in Avater colors, including Landscapes, and Painting on velvet, are taught by Mrs. Hollister. The Department of Music is under the di rection of Miss E. V. Humphreys, who has maintained a high reputation for the two last years as a teacher of Music in Oxford, and who had previously been at the head of the Music Department in the celebrated Moravian School at Bethlehem, Pa. Two Pianos are provided for the use of the pu pils in Music, one of which is a superior in strument. Parents who wish to place their daugh ters at School, where the course of instruc tion is liberal and calculated to discipline and enlarge the mind, while at the same time, the ornamental branches of female education may be attended to under the most favorablecircumstanc.es, will, it is be lieved, do well to place them here. The situation is pleasant and healthy, and the accommodations spacious and comfortable. A parental care is exercised over the pu pils, who reside with the instructors, and plans employed for encouraging the im provement of time and the practice of amia ble manners, which are peculiarly power ful in their influence. TheSchoIastic year is divided into two sessions of five months each, the first com mencing on the seoond Monday in January, and ending early in June, when the second session commences an'd continues until about the middle of November. The terms for Board and Tuition in the branches mentioned in the list of studies, are $55 per session; Music $25; Drawing and Painting $10; French or Latin $10, payable in advance. No other extra charges are made. Books and Stationary are furnished, if desired, at the Richmond prices. Schol ars are received at any time, and charged only from the time of their entrance. For information respecting the character and qualifications of the teachers, the pub lic are referred to the citizens of Oxford or any of the numerous patrons of the School.
